Felicia Update and Video

Felicia got moved out of the ICU today!
In one week's time, she went from being in the worst condition in the ICU to being the best. God is gracious!
Isten kegyelmes!

The danger of brain damage is still there. Today she was scheduled for an MRI, but because of a big snow storm they were not able to transport her to the necessary building, so her MRI is postponed until Monday.
The doctor also said that because of her oxygen deficiency at birth, she will require special treatment to help her development. During the first year of life, the brain of a baby is still formable and can be helped to recover even if damage has taken place.

We had a nice time with her today, and are so thankful for her progress, yet continuing to pray for her total recovery.
Here is a video from yesterday, when we got to really meet her for the first time:

Our Day in Pictures

We walked in to see Felicia today and found her dressed and ready to go!

Felicia has shown amazing improvement in the past 24 hours. She is now moving a lot and is very aware. She is now off the ventilator completely and breathing on her own. She is doing so well that on Monday they will move her to the Eger hospital, as she is no longer in need of intensive care. Praise the Lord!

The doctors told us today that when Felicia came to them one week ago, she was in the worst condition of all the babies in the intensive care unit - and that they in fact had not expected her to survive. Both doctors literally told us that in their opinion it is "a miracle" that she is doing so well, and that a week ago they never would have imagined that she would be breathing on her own in such a short time.
We of course do believe that this is a miracle, and are so thankful to God for hearing our prayers for our little girl and healing her in an amazing way.

She will have an MRI tomorrow morning. Please continue to pray for her brain.
Praise God for what He has done!
Holnap reggel lesz az MR vizsgálata. Kérlek, imádkozzatok tovább az agyáért.
Dicsőség Istennek azért amit tett!

A Hard Day / Egy Nehéz Nap

Today was very difficult for us.
Rosemary got to meet Felicia for the first time today, but it was hard for her to see Felicia in the condition she's in.
We had hoped to be able to hold Felicia today, but we were not able to.

The doctors had both encouraging and discouraging things to say today. As you may know, Felicia had 2 main problems: Her lungs and air-ways, and the possibility of brain damage because of her lack of oxygen.

The encouraging thing is that her lungs and air-ways are healing very well. This was the problem which was life-threatening, and today the doctor said that she will survive. That's is great news, and we are so thankful to the Lord for saving Felicia's life!
The head doctor literally said that this was a "miracle healing" because her condition was so serious.

The discouraging thing is that they still can't know conclusively if she has suffered brain damage. The EEG readings were good, but only a MRI can show what is really going on in her brain, and that is not possible at this time because of her condition.
Additionally, the doctors are a bit concerned because she is not moving as much as she should be. There could be many reasons for this, but it is not a good sign. The doctor said that she is "lazy" and moving slowly, which is not an encouraging sign.

This was not easy to hear. For the past few days we have been getting very good news about her progress - which made today hard, because we had high expectations.
Nem volt könnyű ezt hallani. Az elmúlt pár nap alatt, jó híreket kaptunk a javulásáról - ami nehézzé tette a mai napot, mivel magas elvárásaink voltak.

Please pray for Felicia's total recovery, healing, and restoration - that her brain would be healthy and normal. Thank you so much.

Rosemary & Felicia

Rosemary came home today! The first thing she did when she came in the door was to start cleaning the kitchen... That's Rosemary - she cleans even when it hurts!
She is generally doing well, but is in a lot of pain if she laughs... I never knew she thought I was funny until now!
Nate is SO happy to have her home. He couldn't stop giving her kisses and hugs.

I didn't make it up to Budapest today to visit Felicia, but tomorrow Rosemary and I will both go. Rosemary can't wait to meet her little girl, and I can't wait to see her again.

I've been talking to the doctors on the phone, and they said the following about Felicia's condition:
  • She is still on a respirator, but it is a different kind than before. The one she was on until now had a pipe that went into her lungs, and this new one is only a tube into her nose. Practically, this means that she is taking breathes on her own! Praise the Lord for that - it is simply amazing!
  • She has started to wake up. She is opening her eyes, and moving around a little bit. This is part of the reason why she is the different type of respirator, as a tube into her lungs would have been very uncomfortable for her now that she is conscious.
  • The nurses were able to feed her milk from a bottle! Hopefully we will get to hold her and feed her ourselves when we visit her tomorrow. We can't wait!
A nővéreknek sikerült cumis üveggel megetetniük! Remélhetőleg holnap lehetőségünk lesz őt megfogni és etetni amikor meglátogatjuk. Nagyon izgi!
We will upload pictures tomorrow night if we can. We're really excited about Felicia's progress, and about seeing her tomorrow.
Please pray for her pneumonia and for her brain.

We are so thankful to God for the grace he has shown to our family, for hearing all our prayers for Felicia, and for healing her.
We are thankful for the doctors who have helped our little girl - I just want to go hug them and thank them for saving her life.
We are so thankful for all of you who have prayed for us and shown us love and support during this difficult time.
Felicia still has a long way to go, and is still not well, so please do keep praying for her! Thank you so much.

Family Update

I am exhausted. I think I'm more exhausted than I've ever been in my whole life... I'm going to bed soon, but I wanted to mention a few things for those of you who are praying and thinking about our family. We are very thankful for your love and support.
  • Rosemary will come home from the hospital tomorrow! I was planing to go to Budapest to see Felicia, but I might stay home to help Rosemary. Hopefully we can both go up on Thursday, and maybe Felicia will be waking up by that time...!
Rosemaryt holnap engedik haza a kórházból!
  • Felicia has pneumonia. This is nothing new, but I haven't said it so clearly before. This is caused by the meconium in her lungs, and will take many days to heal. The good news is that she hasn't gotten any other infections in addition to this. Please pray for healing from the pneumonia and protection from infection.
  • When Felicia was born, her Apgar score was 1 (out of 10).
  • Right now Felicia's EEG reading shows that probably she doesn't have major brain damage, because there is brain activity, but only an MRI will show the true situation, which is only possible after she is no longer on a respirator.
  • Felicia's condition is the same today as yesterday, and the doctors are trying to slowly ween her off of the support of the medications and machines, but at the best they expect she will be in the ICU for at least 10 more days.
God is good. Thank you all for your continued prayer and support! God is answering our prayers!
Jó az Úr. Köszönjük szépen a további imákat és támogatást! Az Úr meghallgatja az imáinkat!

Felicia Update 4

It shall come to pass, when he cries unto Me, that I will hear; for I am gracious. - Exodus 22:27

I was in Budapest today visiting Felicia at the clinic. I am back in Eger now, but am SUPER tired, so I will make this short.
Ma fent voltam Pesten Felíciát meglátogatni a klinikán.
  • For the first time, Felicia's condition is stable. Praise the Lord for this!
  • Her blood pressure medication was reduced today, and her blood pressure is now stronger on its own - this is an answer to prayer!
  • At one point today, Felicia was taken off of oxygen support completely - which means she was still on a ventilator, but she was breathing normal air! Later on she had to be put back on oxygen support because her blood-oxygen level dropped, and she is now receiving 30% oxygen - which is still an improvement from yesterday.
  • I was able to talk to the head doctor today, and he told me that he believes that her airways and lungs will heal completely and she will be able to breathe on her own normally. This is an amazing thing, because they were worried in the beginning that she would not be able to breathe without assistance. Praise God for this improvement.
Dicsőség Istennek ezért a javulásért!
  • Today they began the process of increasing Felicia's body temperature to a normal level. While they do this, they are monitoring her brain activity, to see if there is any brain damage. As of now, she is almost at a normal body temperature (37 C) and so far everything looks good.
  • The doctor said that right now he considers her a low risk for brain damage! This is very encouraging to hear, because when she was born she was considered high risk for death and brain damage. God is gracious!
  • Some time tomorrow, if her body temperature is normal, and her brain activity looks good, then they will start to take her off of morphine, which means that if everything goes well, in about 2 or 3 days she should wake up! This is not a sure thing - but it is exciting nonetheless.
Thank you all for your prayers and support. It has been so encouraging for us to receive your messages!
Köszönjük a sok sok imát és támogatást. Az üzeneteitek nagyon bátorítóak a számunkra!
GOOD NIGHT!
JÓ ÉJT!

Felicia Pictures

Today we had Rosemary moved to a special private room, and Nate and I were able to visit her and spend a few hours together with her. She will probably be in the hospital until Tuesday, so if anyone would like to visit her tomorrow, it is possible, just please call her first.
  • I talked to the doctor about how Felicia is doing. Last night she received a blood transfusion, because she was not producing enough blood. As a result of the transfusion, the oxygen level in her blood increased, and she only required a concentration of 30-40%, compared to the 53% she required when I left her last night. This is an improvement, and the first time the doctor has actually told me that she has improved. PRAISE THE LORD for this!
  • Despite the improvement in her condition, she is still in critical condition, and her blood pressure still requires medication to remain at an acceptable level. There is hope, and more and more signs of hope.
  • Some time in the next few days they will stop the treatment of cooling her head, at which time they will see how her brain functions when at a normal temperature. Please pray for this, as this is still a serious concern.
Here are some pictures:

Felicia Update 3

(Magyar verzió lent van)

I just got home to Eger, got Nate to bed, and ate dinner (thanks Shane & Marcsi).

I was able to visit Felicia again after my last update. Here's what's new:
  • She squeezed my finger, and when I tickled her feet, she moved them. :)
  • When I rubbed her legs and talked to her I could see on the monitor that her brain activity increased - which was very encouraging for me.
  • The doctors gave Felicia the medication to strengthen her blood pressure, which brought it up from 30 to 62. That is good because higher blood pressure means that blood is getting to her brain and her lungs faster, and more blood is being produced.
  • She is hooked up to a machine that regulates and adjusts the concentration of oxygen she receives, to keep the oxygen level in her blood at the proper level. I wrote in my last post that she required 67% oxygen, but after her increase in blood pressure she only needed 53% - which is a good sign. Please pray that her blood pressure remains strong on its own.
A special thank you to Kati and Ocean for their help today. Balázs is a champ, and has been helpful as well.
Thank you to all of you who have called or written text messages. It is encouraging.
Thank you all for your continued prayers and support.

The Lord is my strength and my shield;
in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;
my heart exults,
and with my song I give thanks to him.
Psalm 27

28. Zsoltár

Felicia Update 2

(Magyar verzió lent van)

I just got back from the clinic where Felicia is being cared for.
Here's the latest:
  • Her condition is NOT stable, it is critical. It has not gotten worse, I was just mistaken when I previously said that she was stable. So her condition has not improved, but it has not gotten worse either, which the doctors were happy about. The first 24 hrs have passed, but the doctors said that the next 24 hrs are also very critical. Please keep praying for her.
  • Another thing I was wrong about earlier is that they are not heating her head, but cooling it, in order to prevent brain damage and help her heal.
  • The thing which is not stable is her blood pressure. It should be at least 40; when I got to the hospital it was 39, and by the time I left it was 30. Her blood pressure is really important because her circulation takes the blood to her brain, so they will use medicine to increase her blood pressure. Please pray for this to improve.
  • Good news> her brain function appears to be good. This is a really good sign, because it could mean that she hasn't suffered brain damage. The real test will be when they let her head heat up to a normal temperature.
  • The doctors are worried about her lungs. The meconium damaged her lungs, and they are inflamed. For this reason, she requires a high degree of oxygen. Normal air has 21% oxygen; this is what people who breathe normally require. Felicia is currently receiving 67%. This is actually an improvement from yesterday; when she arrived at the hospital she required 100% oxygen.
  • The doctors are worried about her getting an infection because of the inflammation of her lungs. So far she hasn't gotten one, but they said it almost always happens, and that it would not be good for her. Please pray that she doesn't get an infection!
I will post pictures later. She is a beautiful little girl.
There is hope for her; please just keep praying for her total recovery and restoration.
God is good, and able to do more than we can ask or even imagine.
Thank you for your continued prayers and concern.

Most értem vissza a klinikából, ahol Felíciát kezelik.
A legújabb hírek:

Felicia Update

(Magyar verzió lent van)

I talked to the doctor who is taking care of Felicia. Here's what's going on:
  • There is one treatment which has proven helpful for babies who suffer oxygen deficiency during birth, which is to heat the head of the baby in an incubator. Felicia will receive this treatment for 3 days, and until then the doctors won't be able to tell anything about her condition.
  • Felicia has 2 main problems: The first, and most serious, is that there can be lasting effects, i.e. brain damage, from the lack of oxygen. This is what the heating of the head is to prevent/help. The other problem is that having meconium causes damage when it goes into the baby's lungs.
  • She is currently sedated and on a ventilator. The sedatives are given because babies can recover better if they sleep, and the ventilator is to build up her lungs. Please pray that her lungs strengthen and heal so that she will be able to breathe without the ventilator.
  • The good news is that her heart is working very well and her condition is stable.
I didn't go to Budapest today, as the doctors said it would not be worth it. I will go tomorrow and visit her.
Rosemary is doing well, but can't have visitors, because the hospital is locked down because of swine flu. I'm sure she would love to hear from any of you. If you don't have your phone number, email me for it.

I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love, because you have seen my affliction; you have known the distress of my soul.
But I trust in you, O Lord; I say, “You are my God.” My times are in your hand.
Psalm 31

Beszéltem az orvossal, aki Felíciára vigyáz. A helyzet a következő :

.

Problem with Baby - Please Pray!

(Magyar verzió lent van)

There is good news and bad news.

Good news:
  • Felicia Pearl Cady was born this morning at around 8:20. She is alive.
  • Rosemary is fine.
Bad news:
  • When we got to the hospital this morning, they checked the amniotic fluid, and found miconium (first poop) in it. They could barely find a heart beat, so they did an emergency c-section.
  • Felicia had the miconium go into her lungs and was without oxygen for some time. When she came out she was totally blue, limp and not able to breathe on her own. She was not moving.
  • She has been taken in a special ambulance to Budapest, where they treat babies with this condition. I am going to leave for Budapest in a few minutes to be with her. The next 24 hrs are critical.
  • According to the doctor, anything can happen at this point. It is possible she won't survive, but also possible that she could have a total recovery and be fine. There is a serious danger that she could have lasting effects from the lack of oxygen to her vital organs - and a chance of brain damage.
PLEASE PRAY that Felicia would have a full recovery and total restoration.
Please pray for Rosemary, Nate, and Balázs. Rosemary will be in the hospital for 5 days recovering.
We are thankful to the Lord for all the blessings He has shown us today. It is amazing that we got to the hospital in time - the doctor said that if we would have been 10 min later, she would not have survived. We are thankful that there is special care available, and we are thankful for all the people who have kindly helped us and prayed for us.
We are hoping and praying for total recovery, that Felicia could live a healthy life. Thank you for praying.

A következő 24 óra kritikus.
Rosemary 5 napig bent marad a kórházban.

Today

  • Baby 2.0 may be late... Rosemary is due tomorrow. We were hoping the baby would be early, as Rosemary's been having a rough time these last 4-5 weeks, but our little girl isn't in a hurry. Hopefully she will come out soon.
  • My school books for next semester arrived today from England. Here's the one I'm really excited about reading: Plus, I am glad to have it on my bookshelf, as it is big and looks good :)
  • I was sitting at the table with Nate while he was eating dinner, and he is pointing out things he sees: "Ball, circle, colors, bird, octagon..." Huh?
I was impressed. I was like 15 when I learned what an octagon is - he's only 2!
Harvard, get ready. Nate Dogg is on his way.

If you haven't seen this yet, check it out.
This woman won Ukraine's Got Talent - and she totally earned it with this amazing and moving presentation:

Big Boy

We are spending our last few days with Nate as our only baby. We all know that the baby girl will be arriving soon, and that she will change our lives; we're just waiting to find out how exactly how much so.

Nate is getting to be such a big boy. He loves to color and play with his stickers.
He likes to take his stickers and put them on his shirt upside-down, so he can see them when he looks down at them!

Here's a video of him and his stickers:

Daddy's Little Helper

We have been making preparations for our baby girl, who is due to arrive in just 10 days from now!
Rosemary has been nesting at full speed, and it seems that now everything is ready, we just need the baby to show up - which would actually be very nice if it happened sooner than later, as Rosemary is very uncomfortable and is so itchy she can't sleep at night :(

Nate is fully aware that there is a little girl in mommy's tummy.
Last night I made the final major arrangement - adjusting Nate's old crib for the baby - and Nate helped me, and kept saying "Girl, Baby Girl!".

Nate loves to work with tools and help me work on stuff, although his help usually makes things a lot harder. He often takes the parts I am using into the other room, and organizes them in HIS way, which there is obviously some logic to, but is not very productive for what I am trying to do! He is good at putting the screws in their place for me to screw them in, but sometimes he doesn't want use the screw which I want him to; he wants to use a different one there. These incidents usually end in him getting mad and throwing a screw.
Even though he doesn't make the job easier, I really like working with him. There is a Christian parallel in there somewhere... :)
