Four Years Ago

On this day in 2007 our baby boy was born, and we named him Nathaniel, which means "gift of God".

Here is the birth announcement that we made for him:

Today Nate turned 4 years old.

He loves cars, trains, ninjas and Spiderman, and doesn't like wearing shorts. He is intense and challenging and loving and sweet.

Although today was his official birthday, we have been having a sort of "birthday week" for him. Yesterday he had a party at óvoda, today we had the "family birthday" at home, and on Saturday he will have some friends over for a garden party.

Nate's request for the óvoda birthday party was that Rosemary would make cupcakes and that everyone would have juice :)

Here's a video of him at óvoda yesterday leading the party snake:

Nate and Felicia wore matching "birthday shirts" today that they got from Grandma and Grandpa:

We love you Nate!

Felicia is ONE Year Old!

Last year on this day, we awoke to labor pains, and excited expectation, that our little girl was finally coming.
That excitement quickly turned to fear, sadness and worry when we got to the hospital - and for weeks as Felicia's life was in the balance between life and death.

Here are my blog posts from this time last year.

Now, one year later, we are so thankful for God's grace, that in His kindness He healed our little girl. She gives us so much joy, and her life is a testimony to God's power and grace.

Happy Birthday beautiful girl!

Felicia Behind Bars

For a while I have been wanting to put up a gate at the bottom of our stairs so Rosemary have Felicia down in the kitchen without worrying about her climbing up the stairs when she is not looking, but the problem was that our stair case is very wide at the bottom.

Last week I used my favorite power tool - the angle grinder, or "flex", to modify 2 gates, making them one.
Nothing relieves stress like using and angle grinder to cut metal.

Here are some pictures:

Felicia - Neurology Check Up

Yesterday we were back in Budapest for another check up in the Developmental Neurology department. We had thought this would be our last visit, but it seems we will have one more once Felicia starts walking.

Whenever we go, Felicia gets tested by a specialist. This time the testing was to see how well she pays attention to things, how her coordination works. She did great.
As we expected, the doctor said that Felicia is doing exceptionally well - even as if nothing had ever happened to her.

We are so thankful for our little girl, and so humbled that God showed us grace by healing her. Thank you to those of you who pray for her.

Here are some pictures from the check up yesterday:
Itt van néhány kép a tegnapi vizsgálatról:

Recent Photos of Our Family

There are a lot of things I would like to write about, and I have actually a few drafts waiting to be written - but as I am back in school now, blogging is not among my main priorities.

Nonetheless, here are some recent photos of our family:

With our friend Naveen and his new baby Hannah - she was only 2 weeks old when we got to meet her! Naveen's wife, Rani took the picture, so unfortunately you can't see her.

Felicia Neurology Check Up

Today we were back in Budapest for a check-up with the neurologist at the developmental neurology department. It's been 3 months since our last visit with this doctor, at which time she told us that Felicia's condition was still bad, but that there was a good chance of her having a total recovery.
Ma újra felmentünk Budapestre kontrol vizsgálatra a neurológusnál a fejlődés neurológia osztályon.

Today she told us that Felicia has recovered so well that she no longer has any symptoms of being sick, and thus we don't have to continue doing the therapy with her at home.

We were somewhat expecting to get a good report, as we have observed for ourselves how healthy she seems, but it was so good to hear from the neurologist that Felicia seems perfectly healthy. Although we will have to continue going back to the neurology department for check-ups, this gives us a sense of closure to this chapter of our lives, and now we can move on from here with our healthy little girl.

God has been so good and so kind to us. Thanks again to those of you who pray for us.

Felicia is 6 Months Old

Happy

Today we took Felicia back to the hospital here in Eger to get a check up from the neonatal doctor who treated her when she was first born. We love this doctor, and she loves Felicia! She was the doctor who broke the news to me about how critical Felicia's condition was, and that there was a great chance that she would not survive.

The doctor told us something about Felicia today that we had not known before. She said that when Felicia arrived to the intensive care unit in Budapest, they detected a certain enzyme in her blood test which is an indicator of brain damage. The acceptable or normal level of this enzyme is 25 - but Felicia's was 1500. According to the doctor, this high number of enzymes usually means that the baby will remain in a vegetative state, perhaps for their entire life.
Felicia's level of this enzyme by the time she left the hospital was 25, which the doctor said is amazing, and she reminded us again of what a miracle Felicia's recovery is.

Because of Felicia's oxygen deficiency at birth, it would be expected that she would be lagging behind in her development, but amazingly she even ahead of schedule with some of her developmental milestones!

We are so thankful to God for the gift of our little girl. She is wonderful.
Thank you to all those of you who have prayed and continue to pray for Felicia's full recovery.
Nagyon hálásak vagyunk Istennek a kislányukért. Ő egyszerűen csodálatos.
Köszönjük mindenkinek aki imádkozott és aki továbbra is imádkozik Felícia teljes gyógyulásáért.

Felicia's Dedication

We spent last week in Vajta at the annual Foundations Conference for Calvary Chapel church leaders from Eastern Europe. We had a good time and good fellowship with many friends we don't get to meet with very often.
During the conference we had Felicia dedicated to the Lord by Pastor Brian Broderson. Pastor Brian married us, and he was Rosemary's pastor in Vista before she came out to Hungary as a missionary.
When we went up for the dedication, Pastor Brian asked me to tell the story of the miracle that the Lord did in saving Felicia, and then he prayed for her.
Felicia loves people, and she stole the show by acting cute through the whole thing. She was the star of the night and looked very cute in her 'princess dress'. The person who gave us the dress told us, 'after everything she's been through she needs a princess dress!'
We really are still so amazed by what God has done in Felicia's life. She is now 5 months old and doing so well. Thank you to those of you who have been praying for her and continue to pray for her that she would grow up knowing and walking with the Lord.
Here are some pictures of the dedication:

June 15

Today is Balázs' birthday - he's 16!

We are taking Felicia back to the neurology department at the hospital in Budapest today for a check up. She hasn't been in a few months, and we are really curious what the doctors will say about how she is progressing. As far as we can tell, she is perfectly healthy - which we are so thankful for. However, last time we went the doctors said she wasn't doing as well as we thought she was, so we are really curious what they will say today.

After we finish at the hospital I am going to meet Balázs at Aquaworld Budapest, where he will already be with one of his friends.
That's one of the nice things about having kids - it gives you excuses to go to places like this, where you might not usually go on your own!

I realized I haven't posted many pictures of Felicia. Here is one I took a few weeks ago:

Things You'll Hear Said in Our Home

You will hear some interesting things said in our home. Here are some examples.
  1. "NATHANIEL! Stop counting and go to sleep!"
He lays in bed and takes a while to fall asleep-doing anything and everything but sleeping. He loves to count lately and he is getting very good at it with all this practice.
  2. "Nick, will you vacuum Felicia's nose this time?"
Yes, for those that remember the vacuum cleaner nose sucker-we are using it again. We have all had a cold, and there is no better way to clear her breathing passages. Check it out here: http://www.thingamababy.com/baby/2008/11/baby-nose-vacuum.html
  3. Sister is fat.
Nate is not sure how to decide yet who or what animal is fat, so I thought I would help him out by showing him an example-his sister.
  4. More Dani!
Nate has a few friends, and he loves our neighbor and worship leader at church, Dani.
  5. Red two here! (Pointing)
Nate wants us to write numbers for him, and he dictates what color it should be, points to where it should be drawn, and wants it NOW!
  6. When dad is driving the car, Nate pays attention from the back seat and says "Zoom, fast!"
  7. Oh no wiener.
He says Oh No about anything that is in trouble in his opinion. He uses this one when jumping on Nick.

Update / Aktuális hírek

Yesterday we took Felicia back to the hospital in Budapest for a check up at the Developmental Neurology department. The report we got is that she is improving, but she is still not completely recovered. So, we need to just continue doing the physical therapy with her, and if we do, there is a good chance that she will have a total recovery.
This isn't really a surprise to us, and we are glad to hear that she is making progress and is on her way to recovery. Please pray for us that we would have perseverance in doing her therapy; it is very time consuming and very tiring, both for us and for her, and she often cries, which makes it harder for us :)
Tegnap visszavittük Felíciát Budapestre, a Margit Kórházba, kontrol vizsgálatra a Fejlődés Neurológia osztályon.

Yesterday we also got to meet Robert and Enikő, who I wrote about last week. Their daughter Dorothy Grace is still in intensive care, and the whole family really needs prayer right now, as they are going through a very difficult time.
It was good to meet them, and share our experiences with them. We hope that they are encouraged in the Lord and they will find Him to be their strong tower and refuge. Please do continue to pray for their whole family!

While we were meeting with Robert and Enikő we ran into the head doctor of the newborn ICU - the doctor who treated Felicia when she was in critical condition and who is now treating Dorothy Grace. He was amazed to see how healthy Felicia is now; when he saw her last she was still very sick. He encouraged us to support Robert and Enikő, and reminded us that their baby has a very similar problem to what ours did. God has done such a miracle in healing Felicia that it is hard to remember how bad her condition actually was only a few months ago.

Also - the Developmental Neurology department at Margit Hospital has a Facebook page!
Amúgy - a Margit Kórház Fejlődés Neurológia osztálya fent van a Facebookon!

Please Pray for Dorothy Grace!

I just got a phone call from a woman from Budapest. She attends the Calvary Chapel there, and she just had a baby who is in a very similar situation to the one our daughter Felicia was in. I would like to ask you to please pray for this precious little baby's complete healing and recovery, and for her parents too during this extremely difficult time.

Dorothy Grace was born on April 15th. Like Felicia, she was full term and was coming naturally when there were some complications. Dorothy also suffered a serious oxygen deficiency during birth, and was born with an Apgar score of 1. It is a miracle that she is alive. She was taken to the same neonatal ICU as Felicia, and is receiving the same hypothermia treatment from the same doctors.

Dorothy is now starting to wake up from the morphine, and this is a time when many things about her condition will become apparent. For us, this was one of the scariest and most stressful times (here's what I wrote about it then).
Dorothy has one complication which Felicia didn't have, in that she had seizures.

Please pray for Dorothy and ask others to pray for her as well. There is hope for her, and we have complete faith in God that He does miracles and hears the prayers of the saints; we have experienced it ourselves firsthand. Our greatest desire is that Dorothy would also experience total healing and complete recovery.
Please pray for the parents, Robert and Enikő, who are doing their best to trust God and pray for their little girl in this scary and stressful time. Like us, they also have a 2 year old son whom they need to take care of at the same time. They can use all the support you can give them.
Thank you!

Most telefonált nekem egy hölgy Budapestről.

Welcome Emily Marie!

Shane and Marianna's baby, Emily Marie Daniels, was born yesterday in Szolnok.
Baby and mommy are doing well, and we are so happy for them!
Praise the Lord for this beautiful baby - wishing all the best to Shane and Marcsi, and looking forward to meeting Emily in person!

In the News

  • A 3 month old baby died in South Korea, because the parents left it at home to go play a multi-player online video game.
I know a lot of people who play these games; I even played World of Warcraft for a while, and I know how time consuming and addictive they can be - which is precisely why I stopped playing. I have seen other people who get really into these games, and the destructive effects that it can have on their lives if they aren't careful. I have seen playing these games cause people to miss church, lose their job, be left by their girlfriend, and even fail classes and have to repeat a year of school - but a baby's death? That's extremely sad.
The couple has pleaded guilty and has been sent to a psychological evaluation, which means that the court is going to deal with the question of whether addiction to these games can be considered to impair judgment on the same level as drugs and alcohol.
It seems like bondage to me. Here's the news report about it:
  • I kind of like bizarre things, and this is pretty bizarre. It is a band of Oneness Pentacostals singing a song about people who believe in the Trinity.
  • A Cardinal in the Vatican made a public statement this week that research indicates that celibacy doesn't lead to child abuse, but homosexuality does.
Also, the American College of Pediatricians issued a statement against the theory that people are born homosexual.
  • For the past few years I've considered the Emergent Church a non-issue, especially here in Hungary. According to this article it is now a non-issue everywhere, and the emergent church is really a thing of the past.

Pictures

Here are some recent pictures of Felicia, looking cute and doing her thing :)

Nate played with bubbles for the first time yesterday, and LOVED them. He did it for more than an hour...
